How to Sell on eBay selling Step by Step Guide.

Step 1: Create an username for selling on eBay

It is very important to setup a new user on eBay to sell items on eBay and make money. It gives you the opportunity to start fresh with reputation (feedback) and choose a name that helps describe your items or business.

Once you create the user on eBay it is important to bid on atleast one item in the first 30 days to create activty on your new eBay account. By bidding on atleast one item it will generate activity in eBay's database. You don't need to win any auctions just a minimum bid on a .99 cent auction to create activty on the account. You can sign up for an selling on eBay account directly by clicking this link: How to sell on eBay Account Signup on eBay.

-----
Account Signup eBay is FREE and EASY and does not require any financial details...

This step takes approximately 1-3 minutes to complete.

(No credit card or bank information is needed.)
-----

Actions to take: eBay Account Signup and BID on an item (don't have to win). (Don't win, just bid)

You want to do this step immediately. Why you ask? Because you want to establish a username now so it won't be taken by someone else and you want the username established so it will begin to accrue time as a member of the eBay seller community. *Very Important Signup and BID on an item.

Step 2 : Get a DOMAIN NAME and BRANDED E-Mail address for selling on eBay

You can not expect to have great success selling on eBay with a generic e-mail address of hotmail, yahoo, aol, or msn. When selling on eBay people want to buy from someone that's trustworthy and professional and one of the easiest and the most inexpensive way is to get your own domain name and e-mail address. Using the e-mail address you@yourdomain.com is much better than you@aol.com or you@hotmail.com as an example, for attracting customers and repeat business selling on eBay. *Very Important

Web Host Pad offers very inexpensive web hosting with a great customer service approach. Both are very reliable and give 24/7 customer support in case you need help. This is essential to function in an e-commerce environment selling on eBay. Remember eBay is open 24 hours a day seven days a week, you need a reliable operation to make sure you can service these customers at any time, and a reliable web host will do that. Well worth the small monthly fee.

I just started using Web Host Pad for a couple new domains I am hosting. It comes with the domain and hosting for $4.95/mo, really great deal in my opinion. Bluehost is another option at $6.95/mo.

- No setup Fees
- No Domain Registration Fees
- No Hidden charges

I have been very happy with them so far and the web hosting package is very competitive with features.

How To Sell on eBay Hosting Advantages:

  1. Branded e-mail and a domain looks great to potential customers and bidders You can save pictures on your web host to display in your eBay auctions (saves eBay fees)
  2. Allows you to create a web site to inform customers about your products, services and additional information you want to share with them
Actions to take: Sign up for Web Host Pad and setup an e-mail address
Optional Actions to take: Create a simple web page for potential and repeat customers to view

Step 3 : Research items to sell on eBay using eBay's tools

eBay offers its sellers tools to find what products are HOT and what items are becoming hot. In addition eBay also allows you to look at a particular items selling history and see what the end prices have been. This is very important, as you don't want to sell on eBay in a market that is not attracting many buyers / bids and can not support your costs.

By now you should have an activated seller account, if not please review Step 1 as you will need the account for research. To view the item selling history you need to have an active account and login to eBay. Now you can type search terms into the search box and bring up current listings for that search phrase.

How To Sell on eBay Complete Item Research using eBay
Once the current selling items for that search phrase appear you can click the checkbox on the left to select completed items. Once that box is checked, select the search button and now a revised set of results will appear, except these are the sold items. As you will see you can research the items you are interested in selling and pick the items that will give you the best results selling on eBay.

Hot List and Item Trends on eBay
eBay offers hot item lists for different selling categories to its sellers for analysis. Use these lists to spot trends in item categories and particular items that you are interested in selling on eBay.

  • eBay Hot Item List by Category [.pdf] (Newsletter How To Sell on eBay Members get this, as always it's FREE)
Actions to take:
  1. Compile a list of items or item categories you are interested in selling on eBayAnalyze completed sales of the items on your to sell on eBay listAnalyze eBay's hot list for trends on your to sell on eBay list
  2. Finalize a list of items that generate a lot of bids (this helps spot demand for items)

Step 4 : Finding the items on your list and being profitable

I am 98% sure you have seen people selling you a subscription to a wholesaler or subscription to drop shipper for you to use selling on eBay.

This does not work and will not make you any money selling on eBay. In fact it won't even give you a chance for success because these "wholesalers" are not selling to you at wholesale prices and you won't be able to generate a profit on your selling on eBay items. (Net Sales - Gross Item Cost = Profit)

I just touched upon and used the term "Net Sales" because eBay takes a fee for selling items and depending on what method you use to accept payment, another fee may be deducted.

How To Sell on eBay >> The Fees for selling on eBay

  • eBay Listing Fee (Varying on listing options you choose) (Manadatory)
  • eBay Final Value Fee (Varies based on selling price, rough guide estimate is 3%) (Mandatory)
  • PayPal fee* (Most popular way for people to pay for eBay purchases 2.9% + .30) (Optional, not really)

*Note on PayPal: PayPal is the most popular way and convienent for people to pay for purchases on eBay. To be successful you will need to signup for an account, verify the account and make sure it is a Premier or Business account. PayPal's fee ranges from 1.9% + .30 to 2.9% + .30 depending on your monthly volume. Consider this a cost of doing business and factor this into the model when figuring out profitability of an item.

Profitability of an Item
(eBay Sell Price + Shipping Fees) - (eBay Listing Fee - eBay Final Value Fee - PayPal Fee - Shipping Cost) = Profit
If your buyer does decide to pay for the purchase using BidPay, Cashier's Check, Money Order, or Personal Check then you will have a higher profit for the item. Do not decline to accept PayPal in an attempt to make more money because you will severely decrease your potential buyers, create after sale hassles for yourself and not make as much money. If a payment comes via a method other than PayPal consider it a bonus it happens about 7% of the time from my experiences. Where can you get items to sell on eBay from? What should I sell on eBay?
